THE PANEL WITH LOCAL STUDENTS
On Tuesday we had a panel with local students in university of jagiellonski. It was an interesting panel because we talked several topics. I was happy we had a chance to exchange our thoughts towards media topics.
Firstly, we talked about television. As it happens in United States, television in Poland became less popular among young people. Here television cable has a high price while the quality of programs are still not very good. Young people here preferred to use Internet to watch television programs. Some streaming terminals such as netflix became more popular here. In spite of this, when it refers to copyright, here available programs in netflix are limited. So people will still find some illegal free ways on the internet to search their programs. For live broadcast programs, some sports like soccer are widely broadcasted by national media companies. For example in Germany, national media company buy broadcast rights and provide free live service for audience. Then they rely revenue on taxation. But for other sports with smaller amount of audience, such as hockey and handball. Broadcast network is smaller. So sometimes people also have to search free streaming channel.
From my own perspective, media companies in Europe or China should think about the OTT(over the top) model. In United States, some companies have already started this O2O model. Consumers no longer need to buy cable, many tv programs and some live broadcast can be watched by streaming. It is a cheaper, more flexible, more diverse, and win-win model.
Apart from television and sports broadcast, we also talked about newspaper. We students hold similar opinions that we seldom use printed newspaper. We might sometimes read it if it is free. But online subscriptions become some people's new choice.
Finally, we talked about students careers in the future. We all realize that finding an internship in media companies is a direct way to help you find a job. But compared media internship in Europe with media internship in U.S, fewer chances are available. Also employers exploit too much and employees can not receive enough. As for Alumni network in Europe, students doesn't think it another effective way because not all university has a big or active network. All the talks are very interesting because voices broaden my horizon of media industry. I really appreciate this chance for communication.
